With a rubber spatula, fold in the egg whites, one-half at a time. In a small bowl, soak poppy seeds in milk for 30 minutes. Place egg whites in a large bowl; let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes., In another large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Combine flour and baking powder; add to creamed combination alternately with poppy seed mixture, beating properly after every addition.
My subconscious wouldn’t let the thought go, though. At house a quantity of days later, I came throughout A Cozy Kitchen’s grapefruit-thyme pound cake, which jogged my memory of that Ina Garten yogurt cake I’d bookmarked ages ago does tea have nicotine. And what are you aware, that recipe is so much like Dorie’s French yogurt and olive oil cake. Then I’m googling all of them at once, tabs galore, and go figure, Deb has made all of them.
So I made a half recipe and put it in a 9×5 inch loaf pan. It looked great till I let it sit within the loaf pan for about quarter-hour and it sank and the perimeters began to tilt inwards a bit. I’ve taken it out of the pan and am hoping it reshapes a bit. It nonetheless smells good and it is cooked all the way.

Also did not cowl with foil. Yes, I think muffins need a pinch of salt too and completely forgot to mention that here. It’s not hurting with out it, however I’d add it next time. (JUST a pinch, nevertheless. This cake is not notably candy.) Will replace the recipe accordingly. If you need two cakes, you might make your almond raspberry layer cake and burn up the egg whites.
