No problem with the weight – Golovkin: “A victory over Canelo would be very fulfilling!”

For Gennadiy Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KO’s), who is actually at home in the middleweight division, the next weight class up is obviously no problem. At least this is what the 40-year-old recently said in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal. It was only in April that “Triple G” crowned himself double world middleweight champion (IBF/WBA) after stopping Ryota Murata early in Japan. But now the Kazakh boxing star wants to know it again. Golovkin is known as a powerful and technical puncher and knockout artist who has won most of his fights before the end. He won 23 consecutive knockout victories in a nine-year span from November 22, 2008 to March 18, 2017. 

Twice he has been in the ring against Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KO’s). The first time there was a controversial draw, although many observers saw Golovkin as the winner. In the rematch, Canelo prevailed narrowly on points – again, not without controversy! For the Kazakh boxing star, however, the previous two Canelo battles have long been a thing of the past, as Gennadiy Golovkin now told the “Las Vegas Review-Journal”.

Golovkin: “We have both (Canelo and I) evolved into other boxers. A whole four years have passed since we last met. We are now at a completely different point of view than we were in our previous two fights.” For the third duel against Canelo, Gennadiy Golovkin will have to move up to super middleweight. In that weight class, the 32-year-old Mexican holds all four major world championship belts. But with a few pounds more on the ribs, Golovkin seems to have no problems.

“I think that this weight class will only bring me advantages. I am ready in a physical sense! I will feel fresher and more comfortable. Still, I’m just as comfortable at middleweight,” said Gennadiy Golovkin. He continues to have respect for Canelo Alvarez and he (Golovkin) knows that it will not be an easy fight. When asked what a possible victory over Canelo would mean to him, Golovkin replied, “It would probably be the biggest success in my career – and very fulfilling!”
