The World Ozone Day is celebrated every year on April 30th in honor of ozone depletion, the fact that our planet’s stratospheric ozone layer is depleted, and the fact that Earth is now experiencing an unprecedented “thousand-year freeze.

It’s a day to remind everyone of what an incredible gift ozone is, to remind us that the sun is a source of free oxygen, and that the Earth is a living breathing organism. It’s a day to make people aware of how much our lives depend on being able to breathe, and how much we depend on a healthy ozone layer that lets us breathe and our bodies can do so many amazing things.

I don’t believe that ozone is the culprit here. I think it’s something else that’s making the ozone layer thin. Because ozone absorbs UV light, which is what makes our skin glow, it is only a little bit thinner than the rest of the atmosphere. And because of that, its a little bit more reflective for the sun to shine in. This causes the ozone layer to thin, which causes the sun to shine more, which causes the ozone layer to replenish itself.

It’s also believed that the thin ozone layer is a necessary for life to continue to exist. I think the same thing goes for the Earth’s ozone layer. And it is a little bit thin because of our continuous use of fossil fuels. So if we keep using fossil fuels that do not cause the ozone layer to replenish itself (our continued exposure to sunlight) then the Earth’s ozone layer becomes thinner.

The only way to get a thin ozone layer is to stop using fossil fuels. And as that thin ozone layer starts to disappear our sun’s light levels increase, causing the Earths ozone layer to thin. So you can see the ozone layer on our planet is thinning. But we do not really know if the Earths ozone layer is thinning because we have no real idea if we’re using enough fossil fuels.

And this is why on “World Ozone Day,” here in the United States, we celebrate. We’re not sure if the World Ozone Day is a day of celebration or a day to remind us that the Earths ozone layer is thinning. We just know that the Earths ozone layer is thinning and we are worried. It’s a day to remember that the Earths ozone layer is thinning.
